Coldwater began as a freight station in
the 1890's. Coldwater was named after the river and a nearby well. Later, the
railroad established a station nearby which it called Litchfield. The residents
of Coldwater moved to the railroad stop. The original post office was called
Coldwater and was established in 1896. In 1897 it was changed to Cold Water and
continued under this name until 1905. In 1911 it was reestablished, this time as
Avondale.
